How to Create a School Supply List Parents Will Actually Use

A step-by-step guide to building a shareable supply list that parents can shop from in minutes.

Why most supply lists fail parents

The average school supply list is a plain text document — sometimes a PDF scan of a handwritten note. Parents have to search for every single item, guess at brands and sizes, and hope they got it right.

The result: kids show up with the wrong supplies, teachers spend the first week of school sorting it out, and parents feel like they failed at a simple task.

A great supply list does three things: it's specific, it's easy to access, and it makes buying effortless.

Step 1 — Name your list clearly

Use a name parents can identify at a glance: Mrs. Johnson's 4th Grade — Fall 2026 is better than Supply List. Include your name and grade level so it's instantly recognisable when parents share it with each other.

Open ClassGear, type that name into the box on the home page, and hit Start your list. No account needed yet.

Step 2 — Add items by pasting links

For each item, find it on Amazon, Target, or Walmart, copy the product URL, and paste it into ClassGear. The title, photo, and price fill in automatically.

This takes about 30 seconds per item. A typical list of 15–20 items takes under 15 minutes to build.

Tips for choosing products:

  • Link to specific products when brand matters — don't just say "crayons"
  • For generic items (pencils, folders) any major retailer works fine
  • Add a note if you have requirements: "Wide-ruled only" or "No glitter, please"

Step 3 — Add notes for tricky items

Some items need explanation. The notes field on each item is perfect for this: "The 64-count box — not the 24-count" or "Any colour except red." Parents see these notes right next to the buy button, so nothing gets lost.

Step 4 — Copy your share link

When your list is ready, click Share and copy the link. It looks something like classgear.co/l/johnson-4th-grade-2026. Send it anywhere:

  • Paste it into your class newsletter
  • Drop it in your school's parent portal
  • Text it to your class group chat
  • Print it as a QR code for open house night

Parents don't need an account to view or shop the list.

Step 5 — Save it to your account

The first time you click Save my list, ClassGear will ask for your email and send you a quick sign-in code. That links the list to your account so you can edit it, duplicate it next year, and manage multiple lists at once.

Keep it updated

Supplies run out of stock. Prices change. Teachers change their minds. With ClassGear you can update any item at any time — just edit the title, swap the link, or remove the item entirely. The shared link stays the same, so any parent who bookmarked it sees the latest version automatically.

Building a list that parents actually finish is mostly about removing friction. When they can see the exact product and tap to buy it in two seconds, completion rates go way up — which means your students arrive on day one with everything they need.
