Basketball and Winter Sports: Getting the Ball Size Right (and Everything Else)
Youth basketball uses three different ball sizes by age and division, and most families buy the wrong one. A short guide to winter-season gear lists for basketball, swim, and wrestling.
Youth basketball uses three ball sizes: 27.5 inches for roughly ages 5–8, 28.5 inches for girls and women at every level above that and for boys through about age 14, and 29.5 inches for boys and men from about 15 up. Families who buy "a basketball" without checking usually buy the wrong one.
Winter sports gear lists are shorter than fall ones, which makes the few errors more conspicuous. Basketball in particular has one sizing rule that almost nobody outside the sport knows.
Basketball ball sizes
| Size | Circumference | Typically used by |
|---|---|---|
| Size 5 (youth) | 27.5" | Ages 5–8, co-ed |
| Size 6 (intermediate) | 28.5" | Girls and women 9+; boys roughly 9–14 |
| Size 7 (official) | 29.5" | Boys and men roughly 15+ |
Size 6 is the one people miss. It is the official ball for women's basketball at every level including the WNBA and NCAA — it is not a "step down" ball, and a high school girls' player does not graduate to a size 7.
Also worth stating on the list: indoor balls and outdoor balls are different. A composite leather indoor ball used on asphalt will be ruined in a few weeks. If your team practices outside, say so.
The rest of the basketball list
- Court shoes — non-marking soles, required by nearly every gym. Running shoes are the common substitute and they offer no lateral support.
- Reversible practice jersey — many programs issue these; confirm first.
- Mouthguard — not universally required, but increasingly recommended.
- Knee pads / compression sleeves — optional, position and preference.
- Water bottle — a real one.
- Game uniform — almost always issued.
Basketball is an inexpensive sport to equip, which means the list's job is less about cost control and more about preventing the two specific errors: the wrong ball and the wrong shoes.
Swim team
Swimming has a short list with a high replacement rate.
- Team suit (usually ordered through the program — confirm before buying)
- Two pairs of goggles, because one pair always breaks
- Silicone or latex cap
- Towels, plural
- Mesh equipment bag
- Kickboard, pull buoy, fins — often required by age group, often team-provided
- Parka or robe for cold pool decks
The "two pairs of goggles" line is not a joke and belongs on every swim list ever written.
Wrestling
- Headgear (required)
- Wrestling shoes — specific footwear, not cross-trainers
- Singlet or fight shorts and compression top, depending on the division's uniform rule
- Mouthguard if the wrestler has braces
- Knee pads, optional
Wrestling shoes are the item families try to substitute. They shouldn't — mat traction and ankle support are the entire point, and a referee may not allow street shoes on the mat.
One link, updated as the season changes
Winter seasons move quickly, and gear needs shift once play starts — a tournament needs a warm-up layer, a cold gym needs something over the uniform. A static email can't keep up with that. A link can.
ClassGear lets you paste product links from any retailer into one page, which families open on their phones and shop from directly. Changes you make appear immediately for everyone. It's free, needs no app, and parents don't create an account to view a list.
Building one
1. Start a list at classgear.co. 2. Add each item with a product link — especially the ball, where linking the exact size removes all ambiguity. 3. Note which items the program issues. 4. Share the link at your parent meeting or first practice.
Frequently asked questions
What size basketball does my child need?
27.5 inches for roughly ages 5–8, 28.5 inches for girls and women 9 and up and boys roughly 9–14, and 29.5 inches for boys and men about 15 and up. Linking the exact ball on your team list removes the guesswork entirely.
Is a size 6 ball a smaller or "beginner" ball?
No. Size 6 is the official ball for women's basketball at every level, including college and professional play. Girls do not move up to a size 7.
Is ClassGear free for basketball teams?
Yes. Building and sharing a list is free, and families don't need an account to open one.
Can one list cover several winter sports?
It can, but separate lists per team are clearer. Each gets its own link, so a swim parent never scrolls past wrestling gear.
Do players need special shoes for indoor courts?
Most gyms require non-marking soles. Court shoes also provide the lateral support that running shoes lack, which matters in a sport built on cutting.
Can I update the list mid-season?
Yes. Edits appear immediately on the link families already have, which is useful when a tournament adds a gear requirement.
Does the program usually provide uniforms?
In most youth basketball programs, yes. List the uniform with a note saying it's issued so nobody buys a duplicate.
